Kirkjufell mountain

Kirkjufell mountain

Probably the most famous image of iceland these days. You need to imagine it without snow and with lots of grass, as the picture shows.

Around 9:00 AM

In January the sun is very low in Iceland, so it rises around 10:00 AM and sets around 16:00 PM. It never goes very far from the horizon, so daylight always feels like sunset.

Eyjafjallajökull volcano

This is the famous volcano that erupted in 2010 and caused problems for several months with flights to and from Europe.

Vatnajökull National Park

Vatnajökull National Park

This is the lagoon at the end of Vatnajökull glacier where it is nearly reaching the ocean. It is the largest ice cap in Europe with an area of 7,900 km2, which covers around 8% of the country. To compare, Campos de Hielo Sur - one of the ice caps that Chile and Argentina share - has a total area of around 12.400 km2.

The lagoon has very easy access from the road, so many movies that require ice scenes have been filmed here (James Bond, Batman and the most famous lately, Game of Thrones).
