He was the first person to reach the summit of Everest in 1953 and he did it together with Sir Edmund Hillary from New Zealand. This Mountaineering Institute was opened in 1954 to encourage mountaineering as an organized sport in India. The city had much nicer buildings than Delhi and was better organized. New Delhi used to be the political and financial center, so in 1911 it was decided that it would be easier to control the country from there and the capital was moved from Kolkata to New Delhi. | ![]() |
