Second leg of our trip. Africa. We flew to Durban to stay with some friends and planned what would become our favorite part of this trip so far. Tala is a private game reserve close to Durban we visited together with our friends.

First, we decided to head for Sani Pass, the border with Lesotho.

We didn't manage to get into Lesotho this time, but it ranks high on our list for the next time we come to South Africa.

Lunch on the way

Lunch on the way

South Africa has many of these lovely little family restaurants. Food is good and cheap, service is great, what's not to like?

Drakensberg

Drakensberg

The Drakensberg is a mountain area that borders Lesotho. These are the highest mountains in South Africa. We decided to leave the trekking for another time because we wanted to focus on other things in South Africa.

Hogsback

Hogsback

Hogsback was not in our plans, but we heard it was nice, so we stopped there. It is not known if true or not, but locals claim that this place was the inspiration of JRR Tolkien for writing "The Hobbit". Supposedly Tolkien's Xhosa nanny told him stories of a dragon living behind the mountains, which Tolkien turned into Smaug.

Fantastic and beautiful spot! Used to be an orange farm and it was turned into a boutique hotel. Our room used to be the office where they would pay the workers every week.

Our first lion!!!

Our first lion!!!

After three months we realized that lions are the most boring animals to look at, because they don't do anything during the day. You are lucky if you can see one walking, as they normally sleep during the day.

Puff adders are the snakes that cause more fatalities in Africa because they are common, live close to populated areas and can be aggressive. This one couldn't care less about us though.

White tiger

White tiger

White tigers are white because of lack of melanin. As a leopard with too much melanin becomes black and therefore, a panther, a cat with lack of melanin becomes white. Humans love "white" animals, so they inbreed them to maintain the color, which results in birth defects such as blindness (as is this tiger in the pictures), infertility and other body defects.
